1) HARAPPA : It is one of the most important sites of Indus civilization. It is located on the banks of the Ravi River. It is located in the Montgomery district of West Punjab. The site was excavated by Dayaram Sahani in 1921. The Great Warehouse is the main building found here.

2) TAKSHASHILA :  takshashila is located in Pakistan. It was the capital of the Gandhara region. Takshashila University was a major educational center in ancient India. Kautilya was practicing at this university and he was the first aacharya of this university.

3) PATALIPUTRA : It is located on the banks of the river Ganga and is the capital of the present state of Bihar, now called Patna. It was the capital of the Magadha Empire, Mauryas and Guptas.

4) BADAMI : It is located in Bagalkot district. Badami's earliest name was Vatapi, it was capital of the Chalukyas, and most famous for its cave temples

5) KANCHI : (Kancheepuram) It is located near Madras Tamil Nadu. It was the capital of the Pallavas. The city is famous for several Saiva and Vaishnava temples. And the world famous Kamakshi Temple is located here.

6) HALEBEEDU : It is located in Hassan district. Its first name was ' Dora samudra', which was the capital of the Hoysalas. The Hoysaleshwara and Shantaleshwara temples are located here.

7) DEHALI : Delhi is located on the banks of the river Yamuna. It was the capital of the Delhi Sultanate and was once the capital of the Mughals as well. The monuments like Qutub Minar, the Red Fort and the Jami Mosque are located here.

8) DEVAGIRI : It is located in Maharashtra. Alauddin Khilji went on an expedition to this city. Mohammed bin Toghalak built a new city called Daulatabad, near Devagiri and shifted his capital from Delhi to Devagiri temporarily for some time.

10) AAGRA : It is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh, built by Sikander Lodhi then It became the capital of the Mughals. Here Taj Mahal is the most important monument in Agra.

11) HAMPI : It is located in the Bellary district on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. It was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. There are magnificent monuments of Hampi such as the Virupaksha Temple, the Vijay Vithoba Temple and the stone chariot etc.

16) PONDICHERY: It lies on the shores of Koramandala, south of Madrasan. It was the French capital in India.
